In June 2024, Senegal became a hydrocarbon producer, marking a milestone significant for its economy. The Australian company Woodside announced the start of production at the Sangomar deposit, located 100 kilometres south of Dakar.
Despite a three-year delay, the project, which is being carried out using a floating production, storage and offloading unit (FPSO), will begin producing between 100,000 and 125,000 barrels per day.
Woodside controls 82% of the project, while the remaining 18% is owned by the Senegalese state through Petrosen. In addition to Sangomar, the country is also developing the Grand Tortue Ahmeyim gas field on the maritime border with Mauritania, as part of its strategy to revitalize its economy.
